How Music Therapy Shaped a Path to Teaching

Music therapy teaches us that human beings are not as simple as we might think.
At its core, music therapy is a discipline of deep observation—of listening beyond what is visible, and recognizing that each individual carries a unique and complex inner world. These are not clinical skills alone. They are fundamentally human ones.
For much of its history, music education has emphasized performance, technique, and measurable achievement. These things matter. But they do not tell the whole story of how a child grows through music.
When music therapy informs music education, something shifts. The teacher begins to see the child before the student. The lesson becomes less about correction and more about connection. Discipline and sensitivity are no longer in opposition—they work together.
